Tripura’s fish production passed 95,000 tonnes — and the state still imports fish

Two facts sit awkwardly together here, and the second one is the one worth acting on. Tripura produced more fish last year than it ever has. And fish markets in Agartala are still being filled from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam.
For anyone deciding whether to stock another pond, that is about as clear a signal as this sector gives. A market that is growing and still short is a market where the fish you raise has somewhere to go. The risk in fish farming here is rarely that nobody wants the fish.
It also sets a realistic frame for what feed can and cannot do. Feed decides your conversion and your cost per kilo. It does not decide your price, and it does not decide whether there is a buyer. Right now the buyer is there and is being served from eighteen hundred kilometres away.
